Spanish fashion has a solid base of creators who nurture the sector and a potential generational shift. New talents who search to find their place in the market and create their own hallmark. A revitalising style.
One of these “new talents” is Moisés Nieto (born in Jaén, 1984). He is now one of the most interesting designers of the moment, willing to inject a breath of fresh air to the current outlook. He created the brand homónima in 2011 in Madrid and specializes in feminine fashion with some solid fundamentals in its definition. A fusion of handicraft and attention to detail, with a dosis of refinement. He has multiple inspiration, from national art to young spanish culture in a sublime interpretation in sophisticated outfits that combine defiance with experience.
To speak of Moisés Nieto is to speak of a wide range of colours. To caress new fabrics with other more traditional ones that are interlaced on one same garment. Elaboration by hand and domestic production. Design, all within our frontiers.
In his curriculum, Moisés Nieto graduated in 2010 in the Istituto Europeo di Design. He has been awarded several prizes for his ability and talent. In 2010, Vogue Italy, commissioned by Valentino Group. awarded him the prize of “My Own Show”. In 2012, he won the L’Oréal Paris prize for best EGO collection at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid show. In 2013 he was finalist in the Mango Fashion Awards. In 2015, after several attempts, Moisés Nieto won the prize Who’s On Next 2016 organized by the renowned fashion magazine Vogue in Spain.
His renovating spirit, his organizational abilities and his steadfastness in carrying out his objectives, have been key factors for this designer from Ubeda to win this prize that has allowed him to continue his booming career.
Since 2013, the designer has been present at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid as one of the most robust designers for womens fashion. Besides this twice yearly event with Spanish fashion, Moisés Nieto works actively with other brands such as Pandora jewellry, Eastpack, Artist Studio, eBay, H&M and El Corte Inglés.
We will see what the future brings, but Moisés Nieto already took off a few years ago and is now starting to shine.
This season our wardrobes will be invaded again by birds, in all colourful shapes and forms that portray their vivacity. This obsession for birds in fashion is not something new and this print has migrated regularly into the designs of the top fashion brands.
Multiple species of birds have decorated the fabrics and been a part of the most sophisticated pieces in the past decades. If we look back at the collections of the last few years, we can see it has been present in various brands. Miu Miu for example presented a collection full of flying swallows in their fashion show Spring-Summer 2010. Rochas previously used them. Five years later, Pradas smaller sibling reused the idea for their Cruise 2016 proposal. The owls by Burberry Prorsum in 2012 marked a turning point.
This year, the direction of the wind has situated the nest on new garments in the current spring collections. This is the case with Loewes geese prints, that give them an earthly counterpoint to their futuristic touch proposal. Birds are also present on the Gucci, Valentino and Alexander McQueen fashion shows. From the most decorative to the most minimalist designs. Is it a short lived trend? Not at all, birds are high up the trends this autumn. Moreover, the most exotic birds such as the hummingbird or tucan are often reserved for accessories and jewellry in tropical style combinations.
How can it be worn in everyday wear?
Birds and more birds can be seen on the top celebrity styles. In Hollywood, actresses such as Cate Blanchett, Keira Knightley or Dianna Agron have sported on the red carpet spectacular satin and silk dresses with bird prints. There has always been a close connection between these flying animals and cinema. Beyond Hitchlers terrifying avalanche of these flying creatures, there has been some legendary moments where birds have gained a particular symbolism. A recent example, in the film “The Hunger Games” where the Sinsajo bird gains promincence as an icon also in the clothes worn by the Oscar winning actress Jennifer Lawrence.
And from Hollywood to the high Street. The vitality of the birds has also succumbed the fashion bloggers who share on their web and video blogs the latest trends or styles that can be worn by real women.
If you would like to try this free and easy print, Gratacós includes in their collection a bird Jacquard in red. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Gratacos is past, present and also future. Often, in order to understand better in which direction we are moving, it is important to delve into our past and see the paths we took as a family business. We must refresh our memory and look back at those black and white pictures where it all started in 1940 with Antonio Gratacos and Josefina Ortiz de la Orden.
On this occasion, we want to share with you some photos from our album that portray some unforgettable moments. So we pulled out of the memory box two window displays from the 1950's, at a time when consumerism in the City was suffering as a result of the postwar. Nevertheless, Gratacos strived to seduce their customers with their beautiful fabrics, in line with the trends in colours and style of the moment.
An extensive collection that was held at their historical premises in Paseo de Gracia, 108, before it was refurbished in 1962. Lastly, but not least, the award ceremony for the commemorative plaque on Gratacos' 50th anniversary. The award, given to Josefina Ortiz de la Orden and Antonio Gratacós Pahissa at the Hotel Princesa Sofía in Barcelona, served as recognition for their work and family business in the textile industry.
Three generations later, the spirit is still alive.
